This is why a majority of right wing gun nuts want to keep buying high capacity clips and the guns that use them!
Liberal gun owners often find ourselves perplexed at the often reflexive resistance to commonsense legislation designed to prevent or at least mitigate the damage caused by gun-toting psychopaths. There are many reasons for a liberal to own a basic firearm, including hunting in cases of emergency, or simple home defense. But there seems to be little reason to have entire arsenals, or to possess what one can loosely refer to as "assault" weaponry.
So watching conservative gun owners jump to the defense of, say, high-capacity magazines, we scratch our heads at the 2nd Amendment fetishism. After all, do they really believe that if fascism comes to America, their little arsenal will protect them from fully armed and armored federal agents? Even in the wingnut fantasyland of Red Dawn, that sort of thinking is more than a little foolish.
It takes reading some conservative blogs to really understand what the 2nd Amendment fetish is really all about for hardcore conservatives.
As usual, it's about race, and tied in with their opposition to spending on behalf of the needy. It's the belief that they are John Galt, their tax dollars are supporting the welfare state--which to them, basically means minorities in inner cities. And that when they finally shrug, shrink government down to the size of a bathtub, and head off to Galt's Gulch in body and/or spirit, the helpless masses of subhumans will throng to their doorstep to redistribute their wealth. And when that day comes, that's, of course, what the guns are for. In fact, they're looking forward to it.
Case in point: take the following seemingly innocuous thread at conservative community blog Free Republic. The thread is taken from a Yahoo News article titled "GOP Spending Cuts Would Affect Millions of People", and really exposes what lies at the heart and intersection of the conservative anti-welfare, pro-gun fetishism. It's not just Free Republic or conservative blogs, either. My neighbor in my apartment complex is a gun owner who once told me that all black people should have been "shipped back to Africa after the Civil War, and we wouldn't have all these problems". There's no question in his mind what his plans are for his guns, in an apartment complex with a balcony on a hill.
Anyway, conservative activist traditional1 treats us to what "affecting millions of people" means to him early in the thread:

Then we'll see who will "tone down the rhetoric".
This person's sig line is Don't gotsta worry 'bout no mo'gage, don't gotsta worry 'bout no gas; Obama gonna take care o' me!". He would also be the first to tell you that he's not a racist, and to go ballistic if you said the Tea Party might have racist overtones.
After someone suggests that the picture probably showed an EBT (government assistance) line, conservative Hoffer_Rand shares this:

Something like that. It was a program to apply for rent assistance, but the word got out that they were giving out money to help pay people's rent. They just about had riots when people in the crowd found out that all they were handing out were applications and not free money, especially because they'd been standing in line for hours.
I said at the time they needed to send somebody with a bullhorn up and down through the crowd, telling people that they were only going to get an application and not any cash. That crowd would have been cut by 90% in no time.
Because, of course, desperate people struggling to get by in crime-ridden neighborhoods plagued by institutional neglect and racism are just greedy, selfish bastards looking for a handout. Also, Hoffer_Rand's sig line? There ARE two Americas: "God's children" and the tax payers. No, no racism there. I'm reminded of the great Christmas Carol quote:
"Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child. Oh God. to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust."
But back to the Christian brethren of Free Republic. When Freeper cripplecreek says that cuts won't affect him, since he's not some government slave (apparently, no teachers, cops or firefighters have ever made purchases that benefited him or his employers), traditional1 comes back with:
Me neither, other than to the Tax Man.
Better lay in some extra ammo, though, if you live near a major urban area.....the Dem voterbase will be heading to the suburbs to take what they believe that they have a "Right" to........
Yes, the entire Democratic voter base of parasites lives in the inner cities, and will be so starved and desperate that they'll be smash-and-grabbing everything they can from God-fearing John Galts. Ah, but not if John Galt lives far enough away! Says cripplecreek:

Methinks cripplecreek might want to worry about grocery stores not getting goods trucked in in his rural area when the economic collapse hits. Just a thought.
Then other freedom-loving Freepers get into the mix, like Dick Bachert, who says:

Target. Rich. Environment. Yes, all those desperate black people will give Dick a target-rich environment for his sweet, sweet arsenal of manly firepower. Dick's sig line, by the way, is "2012 CAN'T COME SOON ENOUGH FOR ME. HOW ABOUT YOU?". Dick clearly cannot wait to see himself rid of our black socialist president, by any means necessary.
